The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) detected products on the market that contained muscimol, which is a neurotoxin (a powerful central nervous system inhibitor) and hallucinogen naturally present in mushroom fly amanita (Amanita muscaria).

With regard to the detected levels of muscimol, following products were assessed as harmful to health in accordance with Article 14(2)(a) of Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002:

EUPHORIA MAGIC GUMMIES alien, jelly with muscimol packaged à 5 x 4,4 g, 25 mg muscimol, without denomination of the lot / use by date / best before day, place of inspection: ŠLACHTA LUKÁŠ, Nádražní 716/46, 702 00 Ostrava, distributor: EUPHORIA TRADE s.r.o., Klimentská 1216/46, 110 00 Prague. Radek ČECH, Lidická 1777/24, 466 01 Jablonec nad Nisou, distributor: without specification. Laboratory analysis of the product confirmed muscimol amounting to 238 mg/kg.

CAFIA will initiate administrative proceedings with the inspection persons.

CAFIA inspectors sampled the products within an ongoing inspection activity aimed at foodstuffs containing muscimol and foodstuffs that can reasonably be assumed to contain muscimol, even though it is not directly indicated on the labelling or in the description when sold, e.g. via Internet.

The reason for the inspection activity is that the number of entities offering products with muscimol or fly amanita extracts is increasing.

These products are often sold as non-food goods – e.g. as souvenirs or collectibles. However, it is clear from their nature and presentation that they are foodstuffs intended for human consumption and the inspectors of CAFIA therefore treat them that way.
