The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) releases the results of an inspection activity focused on food supplements intended for joint nutrition. The overview of all non-compliant and compliant samples is available on the Food Pillory website.

Within this inspection, inspectors took 12 samples of food supplements to be evaluated in the laboratory. A total of 6 samples failed to comply with the legislation requirements as the laboratory analysis confirmed lower levels of chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine sulphate, collagen, MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) or vitamins compared to the information stated on the labelling. The operators in question have thus violated Article 7(1)(a) of Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 by indicating misleading information about the foodstuffs, in particular as regards their characteristics and composition.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure with the inspected persons.

CAFIA inspectors carried out the inspection activity with regard to the extensive offer of food supplements intended for joint nutrition on the market. The food supplements differ in their ingredients, form, method of use and price, and consumers choose them with regard to the content of the declared ingredients and their expected effects. The sale of these products is often supported, inter alia, by targeted advertising.

During a similarly targeted inspection activity in 2021, laboratory evaluation confirmed unsatisfactory parameters in 7 out of 10 samples taken. Due to the repeated unsatisfactory results, control activities of this segment will continue in the future as well.
