International Scientific Conference “European Agri-Food Sustainability & Innovation” – presentations from the conference
As part of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU and with the support of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the international scientific conference “EUROPEAN AGRI-FOOD SUSTAINABILITY & INNOVATION” was held in Prague on 28 and 29 November 2022.
In the current difficult times of energy shocks, high inflation and war in Ukraine, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic aimed to highlight through this conference the urgency of maintaining a competitive European Agri-Food chain and the potential of scientific developments to strengthen the EU’s food security.
The conference featured 27 speakers: the Minister of Agriculture of the Czech Republic Zdeněk Nekula, representatives of the European Commission – Commissioner Stella Kyriakides (DG SANTE) and DG AGRI representative Maciej Golubiewski, Members of the European Parliament Martin Hlaváček and Michaela Šojdrová, EFSA Executive Director Dr. Bernhard Url. Furthermore, representatives of European organisations (CPVO, COPA-COGECA, IFOAM, FEFAC, Friends of the Earth), scientific institutions, representatives of the food and agriculture sector (FoodDrinkEurope, CropLife Europe, Euroseeds, Agrarian Chamber of the Czech Republic, KWS Saat, Inari, Yara Europe, The Voluntary Initiative), JRC, EFSA and last but not least a representative of the USDA and farmer Mike Paustian, who uses GM/NGT in crop and livestock production in practice (Iowa, USA).
The two-day event was attended by more than 200 participants with a high representation of international attendees.
Presentations and discussion panels focused on the sustainability of food and farming in the EU in the context of the European Green Deal objectives, the importance of collaboration and communication across the food chain, and a rethinking of some traditional approaches in favour of modern ones, including the use of new genomic techniques.
